The precombustion chamber is filled with a mixture of fuel and air. The mixture is ignited and then burned. A powerful jet of flame is released from a small hole at the bottom of the combustion chamber, penetrating the main combustion chamber for ignition. Compared with traditional spark ignition method, this method has larger ignition area and fast flame spreading speed, and can improve the overall combustion efficiency. The research s of this technology include passive and active precombustion chamber. For the former, the main combustor mixture is pushed through the hole through a compression stroke into the precombustion chamber. For the latter, additional fuel is used in the precombustion chamber to promote lean combustion in the main combustion chamber.

"Purdue has great potential in automotive technology and future engine research," said Li Qiao, associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics at purdue university's school of engineering. Purdue university engineering and science researchers are collaborating to develop innovative solutions, one of which is the pre-combustion chamber injection ignition technology, "Qiao said. The technology has superior performance and is already used in large-aperture natural gas engines and some F1 cars, but not in gasoline engines.

"The automotive industry is under pressure to optimise engines due to competition from electric vehicles," adds Li Qiao. Several automotive engine companies have begun to explore pre-combustion chamber technology for passenger vehicles." Qiao is currently working with the industry to design and optimize passive and active combustion Chambers for gasoline engines.
